New Patients

When Shirkey Hospice & Palliative Care manages an individual’s symptoms and provides comfort and support, our focus is maintaining quality of life for the individual. In general, there are 8 life-limiting conditions for which we provide patient-focused comfort care:

  • Dementia
  • Cancer
  • Stroke
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Heart disease
  • Lung disease
  • Neurological diseases
  • Failure to thrive

When to Consider Hospice Care

  • Diagnosed with a life-limiting illness or condition with a prognosis of six months or less of life
  • Symptoms or trips to the hospital become persistent
  • Treatments are no longer effective or cause more harm than the cure
  • Difficulty managing pain or symptoms
  • Declining condition
  • A change in cognitive and functional abilities
  • Difficulty with eating, bathing, dressing, toileting

Other considerations

  • Wishing to remain at home, rather than in a hospital
  • Caregivers feeling overwhelmed

Financial Considerations

Once an individual meets hospice eligibility criteria, Medicare, Medicaid and most private insurers pay for hospice care, which includes:

  • Nursing care
  • Hospice aides
  • Physician-directed services
  • Medications
  • Medical equipment
  • Medical social services
  • Therapies
  • Incontinence supplies
  • Spiritual care
  • Continuous care during final hours
  • Bereavement services

Volunteer

Shirkey Hospice & Palliative Care’s volunteer program is always seeking community members to lend a hand, lend an ear and share their talents. If interested in becoming a meaningful part in a person’s quality of life, please contact us. Examples of volunteer support are friendly visits, a game of cards, letter writing, Bible study or running an errand to relieve caregivers.

Refer a Patient

Most times, primary care physicians or caregivers are the first to recognize when a patient or loved one would benefit from hospice care. Shirkey Hospice & Palliative Care’s hometown approach is doing whatever it takes to make individuals and their loved ones feel comfortable, loved and cared for. Our approach begins with same-day admissions when possible because time is of the essence.
